What’s This CrossFit About Anyway?

You may have never trained before or you may just be looking for something different to keep your training progressing toward being a better version of yourself and improving your fitness goals. Most people by now have heard of CrossFit and have different thoughts and feelings about what it is and what’s involved. Sometimes you hear amazing stories about the progress people have had and on the other end of the spectrum you hear stories of injury and discomfort and how intimidating it can be.

The reality is every CrossFit is completely different. All are independently owned and operated. Each owner has their own style of writing and coaching their training programs and the way they build and encourage their communities are completely different. This is why it is important to try out a box before you join.

You can easily find local CrossFit affiliates use the affilate finder tool here. This way you can see for yourself what the community is like, what the style of training is and how supportive and encouraging the coaches are.

So, what type of CrossFit are we?

The main goal of Sagitta is to be a supportive and encouraging community where you see great results and are motivated to keep coming!

I have been a CrossFit coach since 2014 and been through the whole cycle of competing, pushing beyond boundaries, dealing with egos and competitive clicks and learning from my own mistakes and then doing a 180 back to what makes CrossFit great, which is a supportive fun community leave your ego at the door and everyone is in this journey together no matter what level!

It doesn't matter whether you are an absolute beginner or an advanced crossfitter, we all deserve to be treated equally and everyone has a common goal of wanting to improve. I’m not a fan of gyms that have an elite group of people who feel they are better than everyone else and act like their workout is more important because they are better.

We all have a common goal and that is we want to improve our health and fitness and live a healthy lifestyle that ensures we remain happy and healthy through all our years.

Does this mean we don’t compete? Absolutely not.

crossfit competition

I love competing! To me that feeling I get when I finish a comp is worth every little bit of the pain I had to endure on the day. For me comps give me a goal to work towards and keep me progressing but I'm definitely not as serious about them as I was in prior years. I think they are a great tool for some but not at all necessary.

We like to encourage people who are keen to give it a go but for those who aren’t interested this is completely ok. After all, there is some risk in competing which I’m going to talk more about in another blog because there is a certain risk for reward aspect when pushing yourself beyond your limits and for some the risk doesn’t outweigh the reward.

The main goal I have when programming the training for Sagitta is to help our clients. Improve their strength, fitness and skill in a fun and rewarding way where you see tangible results regularly.

For those who are looking for a little more, we do run extra training programs as well to give you a bit more edge if you would like but the daily class is perfect for most and you will see incredible results faster than you realise which will keep you excited and motivated to continue training.

So, what sort of things do we do throughout the weeks?

I tend to write training plans that go for around 8 weeks that ensure that you get appropriate progressions to improve but it also means we change often enough that training doesn’t become stale and boring. In that plan will be strength progressions for any number of different strength movements this could include, Olympic lifting, power lifting dumbbells, kettlebells or body weight.

I often use our progression to develop gymnastics skill, stability and support muscles and specific fitness development. What makes CrossFit great is the variation. Whilst I have a plan of our weekly progressions I also write varying workouts every week to keep things exciting and to ensure we complete a balance program each week.

An example of a week’s classes looks like this;

training plan

If you can read this and you understand, great! If you don't understand it doesn't matter because our coaches are highly trained to coach this to you. They will teach you what to do and how to do it properly.

The other common thing I hear is I can’t do this, it’s too hard or advanced. When writing a CrossFit program for a class I always write the most advanced version I’m looking for in the program and the coaches will modify or adjust each section specifically for each client that day to ensure they are getting the perfect progression out of that movement to improve.

E.g. A muscle-up for 85% of the gym is not achievable but ultimately, we are wanting to improve push/pull strength and core and shoulder stability so this movement might become a burpee with a ring row or pull-up instead.

The best part is you don't have to worry, you just turn up and we will take care of the rest!

Prior to CrossFit I could never maintain a consistent program at the gym but since starting in 2012 I have never looked back and loved the journey every step of the way!

If you haven't tried, we do a free week trial so you can see for yourself if it’s for you and what it’s like to be a member at sagitta! Give it a go! You have nothing to lose and you may just find exactly what you've been looking for :)
